A winery we are very interested in due to the positive impact on customers at our tastings and for the winery’s commitment to supporting the endangered African wild dogs- the rarest large mammal in South Africa. With only around 400 adult dogs (Painted Wolfs) remaining, the support from the sales of these wines contribute to the vital conservation of these stunning animals.  We are arranging for founder winemaker Jeremy to visit us in Spring 2025 for a talk and wine tasting with our customers. We are also planning to visit the winery in 2026.

Winemaker Jeremy Borg

Jeremy and Emma Borg founded Painted Wolf to create wines from a small number of growers in some of South Africa’s prime sites, including Paarl, Swartland and Stellenbosch – from low-yielding areas which are mostly unirrigated and farmed organically or with minimal organic outputs – and to support conservation of the endangered African wild dog.

A rich, full-bodied and elegant wine with intense layers of blackberries and forest fruits, leather, mushroom and pungent black pepper. Ripe, beautifully integrated tannins and firm acidity provide structure and lead to a long, rewarding finish.

Grenache and Carignan grapes were harvested on Welgegund farm on western facing slopes above Wellington; Syrah and Mourvèdre are both from Kasteelsig vineyard, a certified organic vineyard in the Swartland. The Carignan vines are over 45 years old and are registered heritage vines. Neither of the above vineyards are irrigated. Grenache Gris is from Voor Perdeberg.

Maturation

The wine was aged in 300-litre French oak barrels for 12 months with Syrah in new barrels. The Grenache Gris was fermented in a stainless-steel tank

Food Pairing

Lamb shank or sirloin steak
