“This is the flagship cuvée, made from eighty-year-old vines and it is a benchmark Saumur-Champigny.”
Matthew Jukes – MoneyWeek.
The Filliatreaus’ flagship wine, the terrific ‘Vieilles Vignes’ is made from a parcel of octogenerian vines that yield a strapping dark, earthy wine with a wealth of dark fruit flavours.
The opinion of the Hachette Wine Guide
In 1967, Paul Filliatreau moved to the family property. He enlarged it and directed it towards the production of red wines. Several times hailed by the Hachette juries, the Vieilles Vignes cuvée particularly shines this year. This high-end wine comes from the oldest plants on the farm, half a century old. With a deep garnet, it expresses pleasant aromas of black fruits and flowers. Ample, powerful and round, structured by well extracted tannins, this 2003 is very flattering and already gives a lot of pleasure.
“I love this property and all of its wines. Cabernet Franc, from warmer vintages in the Loire, can rival the great red wines of France, but they never trouble the credit card. Perhaps a little unfortunate for the Domaines here, but a wondrous jackpot for those of us who know this secret. How many other regions in the world retail their greatest labels for less than twenty quid? Buy all you can and only tell people you love about the stellar wines at Filliatreau. ”
