Founded in 1903, Famiglia Castellani, based in Pontedera near Pisa, have been producing wine for over 120 years. A historic family business, Castellani are known for producing some of the finest classic wines in Tuscany  Piergiorgio Castellani is the 4th generation owner of Castellani, who oversees the estates.

An impressive deep ruby colour. A young nose showing dark berries and woodland notes. Fresh lively juicy palate with dried cherry and more berry fruit, decent weight, lick of vanilla and balanced chalky tannins, smooth finish.

This is the 2020 lockdown vintage. No cars, no planes, no pollution and no travel;  winemakers concentrated all their efforts in the winery’s and tended their vineyards.

Notes from our wine club at the Victoria Inn Colchester 27.02.25

This brought silence to a cheery room and I was pleased to notice that it was savoured by the guests as its prickly herby aromas were tantalising and transported us all to Tuscany. It has a genuine warmth to it. The dried fruit flavours just kept coming through but the powdery tannins were there to hold it firmly together. This was the most popular wine of the night and despite being £18 it was the best seller by far.    The £50 Brunello couldn’t match it.
When I initially tried this at the London tasting with the youngest of the family he was hurriedly pouring out the Brunello to the usual crowds & critics who cherry-pick  the famous or expensive wines on the producers tables. He nodded and beamed as he spotted me taking my time over this lowly IGT labelled wine.
