I tasted this in London in 2024 and it was in the top 5 of the best wines tasted out of hundreds. A Smokey delight.

Like many producers in La Morra, the Corino family began as ‘mezzadri’, or sharecroppers, when Celeste Corino first moved to the area in the early 1950s. Celeste’s son Giovanni continued in the same vein while focussing on viticulture, acquiring most of the estate’s vineyards. Giovanni’s grandson Giuliano began working on the family estate in the mid-1980s and runs it today. Previously, Giovanni had primarily been selling their grapes, but Giuliano was determined to start making and bottling his own wine.

The 1980s were a momentous time for winemaking in Barolo. With the advent of new thinking, based on foundations laid by Angelo Gaja, Giuliano experimented with rotary fermenters, short macerations and small French oak barrels. As with all new ideas and techniques, it took several vintages to adapt these methods to the peculiarities of Nebbiolo.

Tasting Notes- Bright garnet in colour, this wine is silky, aromatic and nuanced. It has delicate aromas of dark cherries and plums with hints of
chocolate and floral undertones. On the palate, crushed red fruit, rose petals, spices and orange peel combine with polished tannins and a velvety mouthfeel with a long finish.

Critic Reviews:

This is the lockdown vintage. No cars, no planes, no pollution and no travel; Barolo’s winemakers stayed home and tended their vines. Despite the chaos in the world, Mother Nature prevailed. The vines breathed and recharged as Mother Nature provided a complete growing season with defined seasons, a kind summer and ample rain. The result? A vintage of perfect proportions. The wines have expressive perfume: juicy, complete and sensual, with svelte-like tannins that delight from release. There is freshness and transparency of primary charm at the core of this vintage, which is rare for Nebbiolo in youth.-Berry Bros.
