We visit South Africa looking for terroir specific wines like this low yielding example. In 2026 we stayed at the estate and discovered this incredible Chardonnay grown on the mountainside of the isolated Elandskloof, which we could view from the estate. Its perhaps one of the most beautiful places I have seen, and this terroir specific wine manages to reflect the no expense spared approach of the estate.
This opens with toasty rich aromas and baked lemon scents, on the palate it combines perfect citrus acidity with lashings of creamy oak and honeyed pecan nuts. It goes on to pack in another level of cool mineral notes on the finish expressing its high altitude heritage.
Anthonij Rupert Wyne was founded on the farm, L’Ormarins in Franschhoek. It was Johann Rupert who constructed a state-of-the art winemaking facility, catapulting the farm into a prestigious wine estate and the beginnings of what is now a sprawling enterprise.
Sliced stone fruit, grapefruit, chopped hazelnuts and lemon tart on the nose of this creamy white. It’s full-bodied but fresh, with a very subtle toastiness to the juicy fruit. Drink now or hold. James Suckling
