Cascina del Melo, an under-the-radar biodynamic property producing fine examples of Barbera.

Cascina del Melo is set in the gentle hills of Piedmont. In 2003 Giorgio Rossi Cairo bought this stunning estate. About a fifth of it is Cortese and Barbera vineyards, the rest being fields and woodland like oak, chestnut, elderflower, and acacia. Today Georgio’s daughter Caterina Rossi Cairo and her English husband Tom Dean manages the estate living there with their 3 children. They recently installed an amazing new winery featuring a large, traditionally built clay wall sheltering the winemaking equipment.

Tom works hard to make sure there is life in his soils and you can really taste it in this Barbera. It has delicate acidity and sweetness and complexity of fruit, with a delightfully long finish to it.  An excellent food wine, particularly for lamb, duck, or game, it makes a sophisticated dinner companion.
