Bodegas Luis Alegre is located in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, where Tempranillo reigns supreme and big, powerful wines are
the style of choice for most winemakers. When Luis Alegre purchased the property in 1968, being later joined by a group
of Spanish wine enthusiasts in the late ‘90s, they decided to stick to Tempranillo, but focused their mission on producing a
more modern and elegant interpretation of it. Work began immediately to harness the very best of modern technologies
and since then they have given a new meaning to low-intervention winemaking. The state-of-the art, multi-storey winery
was designed so each step of the process takes place on its own level, therefore using gravity to move the must from fermentation all the way to bottling at the bottom.
Perhaps surprisingly, it does indeed snow in Rioja, and it is due to the reserves of this melting snow, that reaches down to
depths of over 12 feet, that the vines are able to survive through the scorching hot summers. All grapes are picked by hand
and the sorting tables are even placed between the vines, to ensure only the best fruit are able to grace the winery.
James Suckling gave 90+ points to all the recent vintages he tried of the 2013 and 2014 vintages and describes them
as “quite restrained styles of Rioja”.
