Made from Merlot, Refosco & Cabernet Sauvignon in Friuli Venezia Giuli.

Joe Bastianich is a busy man. He owns a clutch of New York’s most famous Italian restaurants in partnership with celebrated chef, Mario Batali, is a judge on Masterchef USA, makes wine in four Italian regions, and keeps bees in his spare time. Just having lunch with him is exhausting.

The Bastianich winery is located in Friuli, where Joe’s parents were born, and it specialises in local grapes such as Friulano and Ribolla Gialla. The original vineyard, located in the communes of Buttrio and Premariacco, lies in the warmest, southernmost zone. These terraced vineyards heated by the plains and the Adriatic Sea. Re-planted and re-terraced in 2000-2002, these vines are reaching their height of quality and production.

The house style is very fresh and crisp with lots of aromatic fruit, making the wines an ideal partner for everything from spaghetti to sushi. The wines are already rated amongst the top in the region

This is a big, full-bodied wine. It has flavours of red cherries and blackberries, along with some herby, earthy and sweet spicy flavours.

Critic Reviews:

94 Points Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
A lovely blend of Merlot and Refosco, the Bastianich 2015 Vespa Rosso is a beautifully layered and generous wine that starts off with ripe cherry and blackberry and segues to spice, campfire ash and baker’s chocolate. There are subtle touches of both the sweet and the savory, and the wine is grounded and balanced at its core. This is a mid-weight red with soft tannins and a solid sense of balance. This is a terrific pairing with a rare cut of filet mignon with roasted baby potatoes.
